The importance of ritual
Today, I want to answer a question from a friend. This friend wrote to me and asked: “Excuse me, Mr. V, why do you need to have a sense of ritual when doing things?”
The well-known writer Haruki Murakami once said: “Ritual is a very important thing. It makes us feel in awe of the things we care about, and makes us remember and cherish life more.” Because it makes today different from other days, and makes this moment different from other moments. Especially now that the epidemic is still severe, we should [turn the makeshift days into a refined life] through the establishment of a sense of ritual (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010803486?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202107).
The establishment of a sense of ritual is very important, but it does not have to be done with great effort or a lot of money! Maybe it’s taking time to read a book every day, giving your lover or pet a kiss before going to work, or even having a casual chat with your parents after dinner, or setting aside some time every weekend to watch TV shows…
Rituals are everywhere in life, and we need to treat ourselves well.
For example, I set an alarm clock every night before going to bed to remind myself to wake up at 5:30 in the morning so that I can go out and exercise. Even so, I also found that I would wake up automatically after not using the alarm clock for a while… Maybe it’s because my biological clock is working, or maybe I’m already full of expectations for going out for a walk every morning.
Create your own writing ritual
Talking about writing, many friends have asked me how to establish a writing ritual?
Speaking for myself, I used to be very afraid of noise, so I needed to find a secluded corner to start writing. But things are very different now. As long as you find a seat, you can adjust your mood at any time, turn on your laptop and start writing. Therefore, the entire city is not only my cafe, but now even the convenience store can also be my office…
Of course, when it comes to convenience stores or cafes, they are not open for internal use due to the epidemic, so naturally I haven’t visited them in a long time, so I have been working from home for the past two months.
Looking back now, I still miss the time I used to visit major coffee shops or convenience stores! I still remember that one time when I was writing an article in a convenience store, I happened to meet the artist Zhong Xinling and her little daughter. As a result, I was entertaining the children while writing the manuscript.
Well, it seems a bit far-fetched. In fact, what I want to express is that anyone can establish his or her own writing ritual: for example, some people like to listen to music while writing, while others have to make a cup of coffee before they can think…
What’s interesting is that everyone’s writing ritual is different. For example, the famous writer Simone de Beauvoir has her own writing ritual. She once said: “I start by drinking tea. At about ten o’clock, I will start working until one o’clock in the afternoon, and then meet friends. At five o’clock, I will go back to work until nine o’clock. In the afternoon, clearing my mind is not a problem for me.”
And another great writer Stephen. Stephen King is used to doing these things repeatedly every day: he must take vitamins at a fixed seat from 8 to 8:30 every morning, listen to the music he chose, and then start organizing the manuscript.
By establishing a writing ritual, you can feel more confident and find a suitable writing method and style more easily. What’s even better is that inspiration often comes knocking at the door!
By the way, if you have some special sense of rituals in life, you are welcome to write to me and share them with me.
