"Open Leadership" Book Club: Ten Elements of Open Leadership
Last night, we held the second gathering of the book club “Open Leadership (opens in a new tab)” at the Bohemian Coffee on Chang’an West Road. I, Jun Bai (opens in a new tab) and Lide (opens in a new tab) will share the second chapter of the book “Open Leadership (opens in a new tab)” “Ten Elements of Open Leadership”.
The author Li Xialin starts from this chapter and cuts into the topic, talking about how corporate organizations can promote open leadership. In a meeting, she asked the participants which companies consider themselves open, and discussed the open genes of three companies with different natures: Mozilla Foundation, Twitter and IDEO. Later, she mentioned her experience of visiting a naval ship and discovered the contradictory complex between openness and closure.
Book club classmate Kaisen (opens in a new tab) also mentioned that business executives often face a choice when facing openness issues. Should they “open up first and then there will be trust” or “open up only when there is trust”? This topic may not have a standard answer, but it has triggered many interesting discussions. The team leader Harlem (opens in a new tab) also cited examples encountered within the company to illustrate some considerations of openness and non-openness.
