[Why are we reprinting this article] Resume is a kind of content used to show one’s own strength. But usually the resume received by the company will make the supervisor feel that it is “too much”; some are overly boastful, and some fail to see the contribution that job seekers can make to the company. In his dual capacity as an owner and content creator, Hou Zhixun provides a detailed analysis of the key points that should be grasped when writing a good resume. You can use it to check your resume to see if it can win the favor of your bosses.

The correct mentality for writing a good resume

A resume is not meant to make you brag, nor does it make you humble.

The internship season is coming again, and our company is also looking for [interns] (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%AE%9E%E4%B9%A0) recently. After receiving a lot of resumes, seeing many of them filled us with black question marks. Therefore, the author plans to write an experience sharing article on “writing resumes” to prevent job seekers from painfully writing poor resumes to owners, so that job seekers can express themselves well and seize opportunities.

We found that too many people were unable to tell their story. This not only prevents job seekers from finding opportunities, but also causes job seekers to “miss out on the right people.” Therefore, this guide article hopes that when you go to the battlefield, you can at least advance to the second stage of the interview; you do not want to die on the front line before the interviewer meets you.

Without further ado, let’s get started!

Point zero: Don’t use a standard resume.

[If you want to turn your strength into a resume, grasp the five key points that will allow you to perfectly present your work experience - Point zero: Don’t use a standard resume. ](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhda17Yg3wGnHBb4OYOyRNRSVhl-MwbPMqA0NiUv4Go3AtWp vKcFQ2lFHALIU62p4EowaJfo8gx3YXgUp1H_CPD79LALI2TYgk1j-t1CNwUb5l4tY-UHgFzIwAgoVmjL7cR537RhbcqF6Zu/s1600/1.png)

Although the job bank can tell you many job openings, the standard resume they provide is definitely a big pitfall.

Standard Resume, does it mean that you can conquer the world with just one resume?

Stop dreaming, let me break this myth in one sentence:

“This means that this resume is not tailor-made for job seekers and is full of noise.”

The meaning of “noisy information”: information that cannot meet the job requirements and cannot show the value that the job seeker brings to the company.

Basically, “all the data is useless” in the screenshot above. That’s right, even contact information and names are useless. Why? Because this resume cannot make the job seeker interested in the job seeker and he will not want to contact him at all. Why do he need to know his contact information?

Five key points for writing a resume

Five Tips for Beating a Bad Resume

Next, the author will cite a self-made resume that applied for our company (at least he broke through the zero point) as an example. The person concerned has agreed to quote the resume content, and some personal information has been hidden:

[If you want to turn your strength into your resume, seize the five key points that will allow you to perfectly present your work experience - Five Keys to Beating a Bad Resume](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiET7p-OppGlEAylrZPBdM_9Q52zAciqR5TY0wZmOUX53 OH2fSCWMsguCWEknzOl6g8t98bu7RHSW0AWVMVZJnVHLHKwNUAo66QmPOE0A7W9NWvbqtLKkLEgzSC5AtiuqSpkXI2UxtOq3lH/s1600/2.png)

But if you can still recognize this job applicant, please help protect the person concerned and preserve his privacy. Thank you.

After the analysis of the following five key points, the author will attach a “resume example” for your reference.

Point 1: Personal information is important, but also the least important

It can be seen from this resume that one-fifth (20%) of the page is used to present personal information: photo, Chinese and English name, phone number, and place of residence.

This is a complete waste of space, because “personal information” is only useful if the resume content arouses the interest of the job seeker. When the company’s human resources director opens his resume, if he can only read personal information in the first 20 seconds, what he is actually thinking is: “Who is this? Tell me first, why you are suitable for our position…”

A resume has only one purpose:

“Let job seekers discover your [value] to the company (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/02/value-proposition-design.html), and have an impression and interest in you.”

So how to achieve this goal? Very simple:

“Think about what the hiring company needs, not what you want to say.”

Second point: Using a timeline to present experiences is a basic element, but is the logical context clear enough?

Nearly half of resumes present personal work experience in chronological order. But few people can tell the logical context behind this timeline and what is the meaning of the story? Job seekers are concerned about:

  • “Why did you change jobs from Company A to Company B?”

  • “The work content in Company C and Company D is all about promotion, so what’s the reason for changing owners?”

  • “How are the projects you listed related to the functions our company needs?”

Why are the logic and stories behind each experience important? Because this is the best concrete proof of your personality traits.

Point 3: Please use stories or events to illustrate your personality traits. Don’t just write that you are good at a certain job.

  • You said you are good at “teamwork”, why?

  • You said you are good at “communication and writing”, why?

At this time, the process of changing the logical context of the story between each experience of the job seeker is the best evidence. If the job seeker has researched in advance that the company he is applying for is a small-scale company, he can write:

“In 2016, I served as an intern in the marketing department at Company A. After I moved to Company B in 2017, I was also responsible for the marketing department and the work content was very similar. But the biggest reason for changing companies was that I found that I am more suitable for a small team of 5 people rather than a large team of 20 people.”

I won’t describe too much here, because everyone has to write their own story. The point is to let job seekers understand your personality traits. Everyone likes to see living resumes, not dead words.

In addition, stating “education” is even more bizarre. What the author observed is:

“If the job seeker comes from a top school, they usually put their academic qualifications in a large section. But if they come from a less prominent school, they usually choose not to mention it or skip it.”

However, the best way to write is not to “write it blatantly” or “not to write it at all”. Instead, write a story and reasons about “the most impressive class” during your studies. Because everyone has been a student and was forced to take some required courses during school. If you can tell an impressive course that you participated in seriously and the reason why you went all out, it will not only show your learning process in school, but also let job seekers understand “What do you care about? How is your independent learning ability? How do you view learning?” Three kinds of information, satisfied at once.

If you just fill in the name of the school and department, everyone will be able to write it, and it will not leave an [impression] on job seekers (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/03/what-makes-a-website-user-friendly.html). If you are studying in a later school, but you use a story to show your personal self-control and learning characteristics, you will definitely impress the talent seekers.

“Let your resume tell a story, not just ride information.”

Point 4: Job seekers are not human resources managers. Don’t just write about a wide range of work projects.

Some people mistakenly think that what they want to say is what others want to hear because they are too smart and narcissistic. They also think that others should understand it if they say it this way, right? But few realize that the person listening does not live in your head, nor has he experienced your past.

“A project that uses subjective stories and objective numbers to present work experience.”

*Manufacturer negotiation and contact window: How many manufacturers have you negotiated with? Which windows are you contacting? What are the benefits to the company?

*Media contact and promotion staff: How many media outlets have you contacted? What is the job content? Write a press release, hold a press conference, or repost content to the community? What are the expected benefits and successfully achieved figures? How often do you contact the media once every six months? Or 8 a month?

  • Product digital tracking and analysis: How to track? How to analyze? What is the use of the analysis trace?

  • Market activity process planning: Are you responsible for writing the plan? What units are involved in the planning? Or come up with ideas? What is the management method of process development?

  • Exhibit copywriting: What did you write? How many conversions are formed? What have you learned and accumulated?

Please, job seekers are not writing the recruitment copy, and even the Job Description written by human resources on the recruitment copy will have details. If each project is written as “big project”, job seekers will indeed be able to understand the content, but it can also be said that they will not be able to understand it at all. And the larger the scope of the items listed, the more obvious the free-rider effect is usually.

I have even seen job seekers who have worked for Internet companies and put their portfolios on several websites. But after further understanding, I discovered that the job seeker was a planner and was only responsible for generating preliminary ideas. The website was not his own creation at all.

Please note: You do not need to write down all your past work content projects. Please research what abilities and experiences are required for the job openings offered by the target company? What kind of resources and value does the target company need for its next plan? Please compose based on this.

Still the same sentence: “Tell what others need, not what you want to tell.”

Point 5: Should “About Me” be placed at the beginning or at the end of the resume?

I can tell you that there is no right answer to this matter. However, placing them in the front and behind them represents two different positionings, so both can be considered:

If you put “About yourself” at the front of your resume:

Job seekers must make job seekers interested in you at a glance, so please write content that makes a strong impression:

  • Why are you the best fit for this position?

  • A negative adjective that arouses curiosity (the experience described next should make the job seeker realize that this negative adjective actually brings a positive impression)

  • To what extent do job seekers research the company or job vacancy they are applying for before submitting their resume?

If you put “About yourself” at the end of your resume:

Job seekers must summarize all the above information and tell the job seeker: “After you are ready to join the company, you can start working directly.” So the direction of the content to be written is: What do you plan to do after joining? What things do you think will make contribution first? Make job seekers think they are not talking to a candidate but to an internal employee.

Okay, I know this is a bit of a serial bombing and a bit tiring, so let’s finally use a resume example as a general review!

Practical examples of resume design

Resume Example: Final Review

[If you want to turn your strength into your resume, seize the five key points that will allow you to perfectly present your work experience - Resume example: Final review](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMu9s5UgKuJ-YZZ1lMqALpLcfsetKKSaWf23NgK-788k P_BvEOx0sfmS4YyZrs8Mx9R4PxFqsYVIJyDtmCdD6AmdgJ7r8Azl6Hp1s8QU6k821uhhW_X-z01Rz8M7QdTWT6TQeWKx4L89bz/s1600/3.png)

The following content is only supplementary. You are welcome to read it by yourself. The resume can be simply typed in the above format. In addition, the author would like to remind everyone to pay attention to a small detail, that is, the color matching of the resume. You may wish to consider using the corporate image identification of the applicant company to color the color.

Check point zero: Please use horizontal resume

The reason for using horizontal resumes is that most bosses currently read resumes on computers and rarely print them out. A straight resume requires scrolling pages up and down, which can easily cause boss impatience, frequent interruptions in reading, and incomplete information presentation. One-page horizontal resume In addition to solving the above shortcomings, it can also be refreshing.

Check point 1: Control the size of the leftmost personal information field

Personal information is important, but it does not need to occupy a large area. A small embellishment next to it is enough. After job seekers become interested in your resume, they will naturally try their best to find out your contact information.

You can put “About me

Check point 2: Intermediate experience narrative (largest block)

After the introduction of the Cover Letter, immediately bring out evidence and data to convince the other party that you are the most suitable candidate. Therefore, please research the company’s needs in detail before writing.

Taking our company’s internship program as an example, the ability requirements we wrote on the recruitment website are: “Content Editing, Community Management, needs analysis, customer visit development.” Therefore, it is recommended that job seekers use these “competencies required by the company”, match them with their past experiences, tell a story, and come up with figures.

Check point 3: The end of the timeline—Now

Summarize the above experience and tell the job seeker: “I am ready to contribute and join the action.” Job seekers should first research the projects that the applicant company is currently or about to implement, and explain how they want to participate.

Check point 4: Personal accumulation and works (right side)

The middle block is for “team and work experience”, while the right side should focus on “individual” achievements and accumulation. Because this can show how job seekers manage themselves after work?

“The best way to observe a person is to see how he uses [free time] (http://news.knowing.asia/news/d88fd969-ce10-4a83-a295-0daf3b759816).”

If the job seeker does not have enough experience in past work and teamwork, the threshold for starting an execution plan on his own is the lowest. Because without teamwork, you won’t meet pig teammates. Failures are all due to your own factors, and there is no need to make excuses.

For example, the author’s blog writing, personal community management, lecture sharing, competition experience or participation in some conference activities, etc., are all considered personal achievements and accumulation. However, these accumulated personal achievements must be linked to the position you are applying for. Don’t be so preoccupied with telling the story that you forget that you are writing a resume. This is not writing an autobiographical novel!

Postscript

Finally, this experience sharing is almost over (phew).

Going back to the original title: “A resume is not meant to make you brag, let alone to make you humble.”

Taiwan’s education and social environment make it difficult for job seekers to tell their story. I spoke desperately when I shouldn’t, but I was too shy to speak when I needed to.

In fact, the author has always believed that writing a resume is not so difficult, but we rarely talk to ourselves and organize and share our past experiences that others have not experienced. All the above techniques are just a “tool”. But having tools is still of no help if job seekers don’t sort out the content first. It’s like holding a pencil in your hand but still not being able to write.
