I have been looking for a job in the Netherlands for more than half a year and have gone through many interviews, several of which were conducted directly online. Online interviews can be divided into two types: one is conducted by company personnel using Skype or other communication software, and the other is an interview in which a recorded online video is used to introduce the company’s situation, and then the interview is taken online. The latter sometimes requires you to record a video first, so whether it is the former or the latter, it involves the presentation of digital image.
If you want to find a job, in addition to sending your resume to traditional job banks, you may also wish to make good use of LinkedIn, a social networking site that focuses on business network management. It’s a good idea to manage your profile well and publish some professional articles on it.
LinkedIn is a business customer-oriented social network service website. It was founded in December 2002 by the famous American investor and entrepreneur Reid Hoffman. It is headquartered in Mountain View, California, USA. View), listed on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States on May 20, 2011 (https://wiki.mbalib.com/zh-tw/%E7%BA%BD%E7%BA%A6%E8%AF%81%E5%88%B8%E4%BA%A4%E6%98%93%E6%89%80). On June 13, 2016, Microsoft acquired it for US$26.2 billion.

What is a digital image?
What is a digital image? I would like to use the Digital Body Language model of image consultant [Vanessa Van Edwards] (https://twitter.com/vvanedwards) to discuss it with you. This model includes pictures, colors, audio and video, etc. It actually refers to the establishment of an online image.
The brand image of a company is actually the construction of text, pictures, colors, audio and video and other elements. This is a very scientific process. Take the well-known Dutch cosmetics brand [Rituals] (https://www.rituals.com/) that I once interviewed as an example. You can easily get a glimpse of their thoughts on the company’s brand image from the casting, color matching in their exam videos, and the color of their website.
Why is digital image important? Because a good first impression will not only make the company you are applying for like you, but it will also make it easier to build trust when working together in the future, making it easier for things to go smoothly. In a shopping mall, whether the other party is willing to buy your product can actually only be judged based on a superficial first impression at the beginning. I used to run a dating website myself, and my photos once set a record of 500 likes in just one week. As a result, I had many good dating opportunities, so I would like to write an article to share my experience on online image management.
Five tips for building your personal image
In this article, we will first talk about how to build your own personal image on LinkedIn:
- The first and most basic thing is to choose a good photo. This seems to be a very simple thing, but in fact there is a lot of knowledge involved. For example, I often see many people posting their headshots taken when they graduated with a bachelor’s degree on LinkedIn. If you want to apply for a very serious job, then of course that’s OK, but many people’s headshots still don’t look professional enough. This is mainly because the traditional photo-taking method is relatively rigid, and the expressions are usually photographed very stiff and stiff, and they don’t look confident enough.
So it’s best to find a way to communicate with the photographer and ask if you can shoot from a different angle, or try different lighting and makeup. Be sure to find the shooting angle and style that best suits you. The other thing is to take a lot of photos so that you can choose the best group from them. If the photographer is unable to cooperate, then use your mobile phone to take multiple test shots in private to see which angle of the camera you like best. Finally, there is a method to make the photo look more perfect, which is to use a beauty app or drawing software to repair the photo.
-
Define the image you want in three words and imagine the matching colors, for example: lively (presented with a smile: red), confident (speak calmly and affirmatively: white), professional (high-tech: black, dark purple or dark blue). Then always remember these three words. When choosing your LinkedIn Profile photos in the future, you must use the same tone to design them to convey the three images you want. Take the affordable luxury brand Rituals as an example. The women who come out to speak and lead in their online videos are wearing black suits with red knitwear underneath, which represents professionalism but also conveys a kind of enthusiasm and joy. In addition, you can also see that they use transparent glass partitions in their offices and use raw wooden tables as desks. This conveys that the brand’s products want to give people an organic yet futuristic feel. Company brand image and personal image creation are actually very similar, aren’t they?
-
The next step is to have a frank and confident expression. According to research, an American marriage counseling expert John Gottman, the best way to kill a relationship is to show your disdainful expression (with the corners of your mouth raised). These micro-expressions will cause the person you are with to easily no longer trust you. Smile sincerely and naturally, because most people like sincere people. Don’t pretend to be happy, because people can actually feel it. Especially if you are applying for a management position, don’t show fear. I once saw my boss fire a business consultant just because he was sweating, blushing, and his hands were shaking because of nervousness when answering questions. This is really a taboo in business. So practice smiling candidly and naturally, so that you can be calm and composed even under strong pressure. Remember that people around you, including interviewers, like to get along with people who are confident and not nervous.
-
Then the direction of the eyes should be consistent with the overall design. Usually on LinkedIn, people in the Internet marketing field are very lively, so they usually do not look straight ahead, but look up playfully, pretending to be thinking about something, or looking into the distance, as if they are lecturing to many people. Usually your gaze will lead others to imagine what you are thinking, or to look at objects near your gaze (such as text or pets), which can be a good design. Let’s take the website of our favorite brand Rituals (https://www.rituals.com/en-nl/about-rituals.html) as an example. You can see that the founder’s gaze on the homepage is directed towards the brand name, right? He cares deeply about the brand and the content of the site, and that’s the feeling we wanted to create! The more professional your body posture is, the more likely you are to be trusted and hired. Where are your hands? I used to be a magazine reporter and I often interviewed many celebrities. Take a photo taken during an interview with Ogilvy & Mather Taiwan as an example. Crossing the arms across the chest is often the action we want the protagonist to do. It may look the same, but it is really a confident body posture. Or like the pose we asked former PUMA Global CEO [Jochen Zeitz] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jochen_Zeitz) to do with his hands on his chin and pretending to think about his appearance, it is also a pose that you can try to use in your LinkedIn photos. Or someone may raise their hands in the air in the middle of a speech, which can actually convey your professionalism, charm and credibility!
Keep trying and improving
Digital imagery is indeed a science. If you want to create a dazzling personal image, you not only need some professional knowledge and quality, but also need a lot of attempts. The above five tips are provided for your reference!
