After the 2008 financial tsunami, Taiwanese companies were also dragged down by the U.S. market. The stock market fell sharply and the economy showed weakness. On the other hand, the domestic demand market in the mainland has risen. With the government’s encouragement of cross-strait exchanges, many companies have moved to the mainland market. Therefore, in the early years, many Taiwanese companies settled in the mainland, and the first batch of management employees were sent to the mainland from Taiwan. At that time, expatriates enjoyed high salaries, housing subsidies, and subsidies for multiple round-trip air tickets a year. These were all designed to attract Taiwanese people to come and work in the mainland.
In the past few years, Taiwanese companies have not grown as fast as in the past, and the cost of expatriating Taiwanese people has also been relatively high. Instead, more and more companies use Lu Qian as their main staff, leaving only a few senior managers to be held by Taiwanese employees.
Time flies, ten years have passed. At this moment in 2018, the mainland’s economy is advancing by leaps and bounds. The domestic demand market is backed by a consumer population of 1.3 billion. Mainland-owned enterprises have gradually stepped onto the world stage and become a major consumer country that all countries in the world want a piece of the pie. Major enterprises are more urgent and eager for talents. More and more mainland-funded enterprises are recruiting people across the sea, and there are more and more opportunities for high-paying poaching.
Since I travel frequently between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, friends have been asking me questions over the years. It can be roughly summarized as follows:
-
Is it good to come to Shanghai for development?
-
How should salary be negotiated?
-
Is it worth it to give up what we have accumulated over the years in Taiwan and start from scratch?
-
Why are you willing to go to Shanghai for development?
First of all, I always ask: “Are you sent to Shanghai by the company? Or is it that a mainland company wants to poach you? Or do you want to come to mainland China for development?”
For most professionals who have been working for a while, I suggest that it is more suitable to be sent from Taiwan. First, they are familiar with the company’s content and work processes. The work attributes are also similar. The only thing they have to adapt to is the relationship between colleagues and the differences in life. This way, the degree of risk is minimal, allowing for stable expansion and growth in a comfortable area.
However, it must be noted that the benefits provided by expatriates sent to Shanghai in recent years have not been as good as before. In addition, most Taiwanese business cadres who come to the mainland have to constantly travel on business. I have a friend who moved his family to live in mainland China. His wife complained that her husband traveled every week for business, could not see anyone at all, and was only home one weekend a month. In this case, there seems to be no point in living in the mainland.
There are many expatriates, high pressure, and fierce competition, which are facts that Taiwanese have to face. In addition, the quality and ability of mainland employees are getting better and better. They are willing to learn, dare to work hard, and have the courage to fight for opportunities to speak. Even asking for a salary increase and promotion is more straightforward than that of Taiwanese.
In addition, if a mainland company poaches you, the perspective of thinking will be different.
First of all, the first thing to consider is whether you are familiar with the company culture and industry? Why recruit Taiwanese for work? What are the core functions of this job? What organizational tasks and development needs do you want to accomplish?
Based on past experience, the service industry, manufacturing industry and technology industry currently account for the top three poaching proportions. The salary paid by mainland-funded enterprises will be at least 1.5 to 3 times higher than that in the Taiwan market, depending on the job level and the scarcity of talents. The advantage of mainland-funded enterprises is that there are many development opportunities, the market is large, and there is a stage for you to develop; but the obvious disadvantage is that there is a lot of overtime and fierce competition, and you also have to adapt to the corporate culture and whether you can communicate with colleagues comfortably and smoothly.
If you want to come directly to the mainland for development, it is recommended that you come and stay for one to two weeks to get to know the living habits and working atmosphere here. By the way, you can attend one or two local sharing sessions or speeches to experience the atmosphere here first-hand. It is best not to just communicate with Taiwanese friends, but to contact local people directly. If you have a meal with people who work in related industries, you can know the salary situation, work rhythm, local market dynamics and development trends. Even just one night of communication may save you a lot of unnecessary mistakes and alleviate your inner worries.
Going back to the original idea, how should we choose to advance the continent? If your risk tolerance is not high, it is recommended that you take the first path. Expatriation will be your best choice. It’s great if you develop smoothly and like a fish in water; but if you don’t feel comfortable and want to return to Taiwan, there is still a way out. If you have the opportunity to be poached by a company, it proves that you have a certain degree of competitiveness in the workplace. You are here to fight to achieve the company’s mission and goals, so you must maintain a fighting mentality to fight! If you succeed, your career development will definitely be greater than in Taiwan; but if you fail, you will probably be dismissed by Fire.
Finally, for those of you who want to come here and make a career, I really feel that the mainland is undergoing massive expansion and development. As long as you dare to think and act, there are many stages and promotion opportunities here, and you are required to grow several times faster than in Taiwan. Working in Shanghai, you may face more clients and opportunities in three months than you do in Taiwan in a year.
If you are single and don’t have any baggage or pressure, I suggest you make a hard landing directly, bring your resume and suit, come directly to live, and start making appointments for interviews. Of course, if you have family and other factors to consider, I would suggest that you choose a soft landing, which will be more suitable for you! After all, the price and opportunity cost to be paid is higher than others, which is worth thinking twice about.
